Measuring blinds for bay windows is less about finding one large number and more about understanding how each treatment will operate beside the next. Start with the finished look, not the tape measure
Before recording dimensions, decide what the window needs to do. A sunny great room may call for solar shades that control glare while preserving the view. A bedroom may need room-darkening cellular shades for privacy and insulation. Measure from the inside edge of the opening on one side to the inside edge on the other. Do not make deductions unless the product instructions specifically call for them. Custom blinds are generally ordered using the exact opening measurement, then the manufacturer makes the necessary allowance for operation.
For an outside mount, measure the intended coverage area rather than the glass alone. Decide how far the treatment should extend beyond the window opening on each side and above it. The available wall space, trim width, and proximity to adjacent windows will determine what is possible.
Measure height and mounting depth
Measure height at the left, center, and right side of every opening. For inside-mounted blinds and shades, use the longest height so the bottom rail reaches the sill or lower edge evenly. Record where the headrail will mount as well, since a handle or latch near the top may affect placement.
Mounting depth deserves just as much attention as width. Measure from the front edge of the window opening back to the first obstruction, such as a crank, screen, or projecting trim. Then compare that dimension with the depth required by the specific blind, shade, or shutter being considered.
Some products can be partially recessed, while others need enough depth for a fully recessed installation. A partially recessed headrail is not necessarily a problem, but it changes the profile of the finished treatment and may affect how neighboring blinds meet at the bay corners.
Account for the angles between windows
The angled corners are where bay-window measurements become specialized. Each headrail projects outward from its mounting surface. If the front and side treatments are ordered at full opening width without planning for that projection, their ends can collide when lowered or operated.
The required clearance depends on the angle of the bay, the product depth, the type of bracket, and whether the treatment is inside or outside mounted. A slim cellular shade requires less corner space than a wide wood blind or plantation shutter. Motorized products may also have different headrail dimensions than manual versions.
Rather than guessing, make a simple sketch of the bay from above. Label the left, center, and right windows, then note the angle where they meet. Include the depth of the proposed headrail and any trim that projects into the space. This gives a measuring professional or product specialist the information needed to calculate appropriate deductions and spacing.
A small gap between treatments is normal and necessary. The goal is not to make headrails touch. The goal is to allow every treatment to raise, lower, tilt, and stack without interference while keeping the gap visually balanced. If maximum light control is a priority, the design may use overlapping outside-mounted shades, side channels where appropriate, or drapery panels to soften the spaces between windows.
Check how the treatments will move
A bay window should look as good in daily use as it does immediately after installation. Consider how each treatment behaves in its open and closed positions.
Horizontal blinds need room for their slats and bottom rail. Shades need room for the fabric roll or stack when raised. Shutters need clearance for panels to open. Drapery requires wall space beyond the outer edges of the bay, plus enough projection for the rod and fabric to move freely.
If the bay includes casement windows, verify that the window can still open with the treatment in place. If you want motorization, identify the planned power source or whether a battery-operated option suits the location. These decisions are easier to make before an order is placed than after hardware arrives.
Also stand in the room at different times of day. Notice where morning glare falls, whether neighboring homes can see in, and how the treatment will look from the main seating area. The best measurement plan supports the way the room is actually used, not just the geometry of the window.
Common bay-window measuring mistakes
Most problems come from one of a few understandable assumptions. The first is measuring only the glass instead of the full usable opening or planned coverage area. Glass size does not tell you where brackets can mount or how much trim a treatment needs to clear.
Another is assuming all three windows use the same width. Even a nearly symmetrical bay can vary enough to affect fit. It is also easy to overlook crank handles, inward-opening windows, and deep sills until the selected product is already in production.
